What is the value of x in the problem - 1/2x + 2=3

    -1/2x + 2 = 3

    (move the 2 to the other side of the equal sign, change the sign)

    -1/2x = 3 - 2

    -1/2x = 1

    (swap them to make x positive)

    -1 = 1/2x

    -1 = 0.5x

    (divide both sides by 0.5 to have x alone)

    -2 = x

    Therefore, x = - 2.
