In a hospital ward, there are 15 nurses and 3 doctors. 9 of the nurses and 1 of the doctors are female. If a person is randomly selected from this group, what is the probability that the person is male or a doctor?

    There are 15 nurses and 9 of them are females.

    Then there are 3 doctors and only 1 is female.

    To find probability if the person is a doctor first, add up all the nurses and doctors.

    3 + 15 = 18.

    Now there are 3 doctors. So, 3/18 gives us the probability.

    Let's simplify this fraction ... 3/18 / 3/3 = 1/6.

    And 1/6 equals approximately 16%.

    Now for the probability to find if the person is male.

    Add up all the nurses and doctors. Which we know is 18. Now add up all the males in the nurses and doctors positions.

    Because we know 1 of the doctors is female we know that 2 are male.

    Likewise with the nurses. We know that 9 are male nurses. So, there are 6 male nurses.
