In x^-3 which would be clearer if written as x^ (-3), the exponent of x is - 3.

x^ (-b) = 1/x^b (put the base, x, into the denominator and change the sign of the exponent).

    Thus, x^ (-3) = 1 / x^3 (one over the 3rd power of x).
