Having trouble with subtracting Negative numbers.

I thought if you subtract 4 - (-8) it would be - 12 instead of (+) 12 can someone explain this to me in detail because I'm alittle confused on subtracting negative numbers.

If you subtract a negative from a positive then the answer is positive. any negative number subtracted turns into an addition instead of subtraction because the two negative cancel them selves out
