You and two friends rent a hotel room that costs $30 so you both put in $10 each later that night the owner of the hotel realizes he has overcharged you so he sends the bellhop with $5 the bellhop steals $2 and returns $1 to each of you you each paid $9.$9 times $3 = $27 the bellhop has stole $2 that equals $29 what happened to the last dollar

    They paid $30, but the owner returned $5, which means the cost is only $25. The bellhop knows this, so he take $2 of the $5 leaving $1 to be return to each person. That means that they each paid $9 making it a total of $27, more than the cost of the room. You don't need to add $2 to the $27, because that wasn't the cost of the room. The cost was only $25, so + $5 = 30. So no money is actually missing, they just added incorrectly.

    The dollar didn't go anywhere! The question isn't correct because the money the bellhop stole is supposed to be subtracted, not added. So if we subtract $2 we have $25, and that's how much money the owner got, the men got $3 back and the bellboy got $2.

    So the owner gets $25, the men get $3 and the bellboy gets $2, and that equals 30.
