At the Olympics, the U. S. won 14 more gold than silver medals in Sydney, Australia in 2000. They won a total of 64 gold and silver medals. How many gold medals did the U. S. win?

    64 total medals - 14 = 50

    50 divided by 2 = 25

    so 25 silver medals

    25 + 14 extra gold = 39 total gold medals

    check work:

    39 + 25=64
