A barge travels twice as fast when it is empty as when it is full. If it travels 20 miles north

with a cargo, spends 20 minutes unloading, and returns to its original port

empty, taking 8 hours to complete the entire trip, what is the speed of the barge when it

is empty?

    V1 = (empty) = 2*v2 (full)

    20+20 (go+return)

    t1+t2=8hour-20’ (1/3 hour) = 23/3hour

    t1=23/3-t2

    v1*t1+v2*t2=20+20

    2v2 * (23/3-t2) + v2*t2=40

    2v2*23/3-2v2*t2+v2t2=40

    2v2*23/3-v2t2=40

    2v2*23/3-20=40

    2v2*23/3=60

    v2=60/46/3=180/46=90/23

    v1=2*90/23=180/23
