    500+250x=300x

    500=50x

    x=10

    Sal's bakery already has 500 loaves of bread displayed, with an additional number of 250 loaves baked each day. Jack's bakery bakes 300 loaves of bread each day. Find the number of days it takes for both bakeries to have the same number of loaves of bread.

    Bob wants to pass through the canyon but the sphinx is blocking the way. 'You must answer my riddle', says the Sphinx, 'if 500+250x=300x, find x. I need it because my baker wants to know the answer because his uncle's son's grandma's father wants to solve his problems with this magic equation'

    If bob answers correctly, then he will live. If not he will die.

    (certainly this is a real life application for those traveling through canyons)

    (ok, joking aside the answer is

    there are some people in a bank

    500 water bottles are lost

    if each person was given 250 bottles, then they would have given away all of the bottles.

    if they had not lost the bottles, then they would have been able to give 300 bottles, how many people were there?)
