Maya is driving 120 miles to her grandmother's house. She drives 35% of the distance before stopping for lunch. How far does she drive before lunch?

    She drives 35% of the time before lunch.

    = 35% of 120 miles.

    = 35/100 * 120. Simply cancel off each zero at the bottom and top.

    = 35/10 * 12 = 3.5 * 12 = 42. Using your calculator.

    So she drove 42 miles before lunch.

    percent means partsout of 100

    35%=35/100=0.35

    'of' means multiply

    35% of 120=0.35 times 120=42

    answer is 42 miles
