    By Pythagorean Theorem,

    hyp^2 = x^2 + h^2

    hyp = hypotenuse = 5 ft.

    x = ?

    h = height = 3 ft.

    5^2 = x^2 + 3^2

    25 = x^2 + 9

    25 - 9 = x^2

    16 = x^2

    sqrt (16) = x

    x = 4 ft.

    the answer is 4 ft.
