    "two consecutive even integers"

    we can make those two numbers x and y

    with y being two more than x ... (y = 2 + x)

    so we have that

    x + y = 38

    which becomes

    x + 2 + x = 38

    we add like terms

    2x + 2 = 38

    subtract 2 from both sides

    2x = 36

    divide both sides by 2

    x = 36 / 2 = 18

    therefore our first number is 18

    and our second number is two more than that, which is 20
