The given expression actually represents the amount left with Jared after making those purchases.

    Jared has $32

He purchases 5 packs of trading cards at $3 each.

    So amount spent = 5 * 3 = $15

The cost display book = $3

And the cost of another display book = $7

    So total amount spent

    = (5*3) + 3 + 7

    = 15 + 3 + 7

    = $25

    The expression

    32 - [ (3*5) + 3+7)

    = 32 - 25

    = $7

$7 is the amount left with Jared after he makes all these purchases.
