Christo's Building

Christo and Jeanne are building a scale model in order to plan out the project.

The model building will measure 11.5 inches high and 7.5 inches wide and 6 inches long. They are considering building the model with blocks that measure on each side.

A. How many of the blocks that measure 1/2 inch on each side would they need to make the model building?

B. The way Jean Claude and Christo have made their model, they know that the number of square feet needed to cover the real building is 144 times the number of square inches needed to cover the model. How much fabric will Jean Claude and Christo will need to cover the real building?

    A) 4140 blocks

    B) 6480 square inches

    Step-by-step explanation:

Given that the model building will measure 11.5 inches high and 7.5 inches wide and 6 inches long

    The volume = 11.5 * 7.5 * 6 = 517.5 cubic inches

    A. The blocks of 1/2 inch on each side that would be needed to make the model building will be

    1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/8 = 0.125 cubic inches

    517.5/0.125 = 4140 blocks

    B) Given that the number of square feet needed to cover the real building is 144 times the number of square inches needed to cover the model.

Since the model is of 7.5 inches wide and 6 inches long.

    The model Area = 7.5 * 6 = 45 square inches

The fabric needed to cover the real building will be

    45 * 144 = 6480 square inches
