Tanya is putting a garden in her backyard. She has 26 feet of fencing, so her garden's perimeter must be 26 feet or less. If tanya wants her garden to be 8.5 feet long, what is a possible width, w, for her garden?

    width, w

    perimeter, p = 2 (l+w) < 26 ... eqn 1

    subst for l = 8.5 in eqn 1

    p = 2 (8.5+w) <26

    expanding eqn ... 2 (8.5) + 2w < 26

    fence length is 26ft therefore perimeter must be less than or equal (<) to 26
