You can converte them to a common denominator like 6. 1/2 would be 3/6. 2/3 would be 4/6.

Before you add 1/2 and 2/3 you need to find common denominators which is 6. So for 1/2 you need to multiply the numerator and denominator by 3 and for 2/3 you need to multiply the numerator and denominator by 2. 1/2 = 3/6 and 2/3 = 4/6; now add 3/6 + 4/6 = 7/6.
