The 12 students in Ms McCulley's class want to take up a collection and buy her a $30 birthday present. How much money must each student contribute if they are all to contribute equally?

    Let c represent the contribution of each student. If all 12 students contribute equally to the sum of $30, then you have

    ... 12c = 30

    Dividing this equation by 12 will get c by itself.

    ... c = 30/12 = 2.50

    Each student must contribute 2.50.
