    -7x+5 = 40

    move + 5 to the other side

    sign changes from + 5 to - 5

    -7x+5-5 = 40-5

    -7x = 35

    divide by - 7 for both sides

    -7x/-7 = 35/-7

    x = - 5

    Answer : x=-5

    X would equal - 5, because you move the constant to the right, subtract the numbers then divide both sides by 7.
