    8 1/2 - 2 2/3

Turn the fractions into improper fractions

multiply the denominator with the whole number

    8 1/2 = 8*2=16. Add 16 with the numerator. 16+1=17

    8 1/2=17/2

    2 2/3 = 2*3=6. 6+2=8

    2 2/3=8/3

    17/2-8/3

find the common denominator which is 6

    Multiply 3 for 17/2

    17 (3) / 2 (3) = 51/6

    Multiply by 2

    8 (2) / 3 (2) = 16/6

    51/6-16/6=35/6

    35/6 = 5 5/6

    Answer: D) 5 5/6
