231/8 and 58/3 are both the improper fractions, you can get a common denominator by multiplying one said by the others denominator. This makes 693/24 and 464/24, when you finally subtract, you're left with 693/24 - 464/24 = 229/24, or 9 13/24, thus, the first man ran 9 13/24 more kilometers than the second man.
