2x+4=-6 how do I solve for x in this equation

    The first thing you want to do Is get all the like things together such as numbers with variables and number without them

    In this case 4 and - 6 are alike and therefore 2x must be by itself

    So subtract 4 from both sides of the equation

    You do this because you need to opposite + 4 and the opposite of + 4 Is - 4

    So ...

    2x + 4 - 4 = - 6 - 4

    Then you would have ...

    2x = - 10

    Can you simplify that?

    Divide - 10 by 2

    -10 : 2 = - 5

    That means x = - 5

    X = - 5
