    Let m be Maggie's age. Then, her brother's age would be:

    2m - 5

    Their total is 24:

    m + (2m - 5) = 24

    3m = 29

    m = 29/3 = 9 2/3 years old

    It's a mixed number, so ...

    x=Maggie's age

    2x-3 = brother's age

    x+2x-3=24

    3x-3=24

    3x-3+3=24+3

    3x=27

    3x/3=27/3

    x=9
