A map of a town has no scale. You know that the distance between the bus stop and the park is 6 miles. On the map it is 3 inches. Also, on the map you know the distance from the park to the house is 8 inches. What is the actual distance in miles between the park and the house?

    As was the case in your previous question, this problem involves setting two ratios equal to each other. We call such an equation a proportion.

    16 miles = x miles

    (1/2) inch 2 3/4 inches

    x = (11/4) * 16 = (11/4) * 2 * 16 = 88 miles
