    The length of a side of the square is 22 inches.

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Let each side of square be = s

    Let each side of triangle be = s - 8

    Perimeter of square, p₁ = 4s

    Perimeter of triangle = p₂ = 3s

    = 3 (s-8)

    = 3s - 24

    Therefore, according to the question

    p₁ - p₂ = 46

    4s - (3s - 24) = 46

    4s - 3s + 24 = 46

    s = 46 - 24

    s = 22

    The length of a side of the square is 22 inches.
