If Carlos has enough chicken for 8 and 1/2 servings and each serving needs 1/8 pounds of chicken it means that Carlos has:

    (8+1/2) x 1/8 = (16/2+1/2) x 1/8 = 17/2 x 1/8 = 17/16 pounds of chicken

    (*) You convert 8 in a base 2 fraction (16/2)

(*) Multiplying 2 fractions is the same as multiplying each limb

    17/16 = 16/16 + 1/16 = 1 & 1/16 pounds
