A boat traveled downstream a distance of 54 miles and came right back. If the speed of the current was 12 miles per hour and the total trip took 6 hours, find the average speed on the boat relative to the water

    You can ignore the speed of the current since the boat traveled an equal distance and time against and with the current. You only need to find the average speed of the boat.

    54 miles * 2 / 6 hours = 18 miles / hour
