    A linear function: f: R - --> R, f (x) = ax + b;

    f (3) = - 1 3a + b = - 1;

    f (5) = - 4 5a + b = - 4;

    Then, b = - 1 - 3a;

    We obtain 5a + (-1-3a) = - 4;

    5a - 1 - 3a = - 4;

    2a - 1 = - 4;

    2a = - 3;

    a = - 3/2;

    b = - 1 + 9/2;

    b = 7/2;

    f (x) = (-3/2) x + 7/2;
