At 8am the temperature is - 3 and at 10am the temperature is 1. What is the difference between the numbers

    8 am and 10 am: 2 hours difference.

    -3 and 1: 4 degrees difference.

    Every hour, the temperature goes up 2 degrees (assuming a linear function).
