There are 4000 students at mountain high school and 1/8 of the students are seniors. If 1/5 of the seniors are in favor of the debate team and 5/7 of The remaining students (not seniors) are also in favor of the team how many students do not favor this idea?

    Answer: 1400 students

    Explanation:

    Total = 4000

    Senior = 1/8 x 4000 = 500

    Senior not in favor of debate = (1 - 1/5) x 500 = 400

    Non senior = 4000 - 500 = 3500

    Non-senior not in favor of debate = (1 - 5/7) x 3500 = 1000

    Total = 400 + 1000 = 1400
