    Different word problem - Sarah has 12 pens, She gives 8 away to Luke, but then gets 17 more from Erin. How many pens does Sarah have now

    12 + (-8) + 17 = 21

    Sample word problem:

    Gina had 12 collectible coins, she gave away 8 and then won 17 more from a contest. How many coins does she have after this?

    A simpler way to have put the original equation was 12 - 8 + 17
