    The subtraction symbol infront of the parentheses will be distributed to the - 5 1/4 making it positive

    then you would multiply the 1/4 by 2 to give you 2/8 and you add 3/8 to the 2/8 giving you 5/8

    So now you would put the numbers together which are 5 and 5/8
