The distri bution coefficient is simply the ratio of the concentrations of the solute in the two solvents.

In this case there is 0.5g of caffeine in 10 ml of chloroform and 0.5 g of caffeine in 100ml of water.

    The ratio is 0.5/10 : 0.5/100 = 0.05 : 0.005 = 10 : 1
