Which of the following correctly uses absolute value to show the distance between - 70 and 13?

    Distance between the number a and b is

    |a-b|

    doesn't matter which is first

    see

    |-70-13|=|-83|=83

    |13 - (-70) |=|13+70|=|83|=83

    the distance is 83

    both ways are correct

    but I think the teacher wants you to subtract the smaller (-70) from the larger (13) so

    |13 - (-70) | is probably what the teacher wants

    The absolute value just shows how far one is from 0 so I would set it up like this:

    |-70| + 13 = 70 + 13 = 83 which is the correct answer.
