The sum of two consecutive odd numbers is 40. If the first number is represented by x, which equation can you use to find these two odd numbers?

    x + (x + 2) = 40

    Consecutive off numbers are 2 apart

    so if x is one then y=2+x

    and their sum is 40 so x+y=40

    the 2 equations are x+y=40 and y=x+2

    if we substitute we get x+x+2=40 so x=19

    and therefore y=2+19=21
