    x=one piece of wood

    4x-4 = the second piece of wood

    X + (4x-4) = 11 the two added together will equal 11

    5x-4=11 combine terms and solve. add 4 to both sides

    5x=15 divide both sides by 5

    x=3

    one piece is 3 feet and the other is 4x3-4=8 feet
