    What we can actually do is multiply both sides of the ratio by x:

    9x/x = 72/x

    The two x's cancel out:

    9x = 72

    x = 8

    So:

    72:8

    Because we're solving for the total, 72 + 8 = 80.

    80 cookies were sold in total
