A number is 5 more than three times the other number. Twelve less than four times the smaller number equals three times the greater number. Find the number

    The number that I found was 17. The word problem can be written as 3x+5=y, 4x-12=y. X is the smaller number and y is the greater number. Both of the equations equalled y. You simplify it and solve for x. You get 17.
