Katie said, The ratio of people to pets in my family is 2 to 1. For every two people we have one pet. If her family has three pets, how many people are in the family?

    If Katie's family has 3 pets, she has 6 people in her family. 6:3 is simplified to 2:1.

    ratio of pets to people = 1:2 (as ratio of people to pets = 2:1)

    So for 3 pets there are 2*3 = 6 people. (answer).
