If x=6 and y=17 evaluate the following questions:

4x + 5y

    4 x 6 + 5 x 17 = 109

    Because 4x is another way to say 4 x a number, or in this case, 6. Same thing with 5y. 5 x a number, or, again, in this case, 17. Multiply the two, and add the products, which gives you 109.
