What is the value of x in the equation 3x-16-5x=40?

    3x-16-5x=40

    combine like terms

    3x - 5x - 16 = 40

    -2x - 16 = 40

    add 16 to each side

    -2x - 16+16 = 40+16

    -2x = 56

    divide by - 2 on each side

    -2x/-2 = 56/-2

    x = - 28
