A map has a scale of 2 in : 25 mi. The map shows a highway is 31 inches long. how long is the actual highway?

    2 inches / 25 miles = 31 inches / x

    Cross-multiply the proportion:

    2x inch-miles = 775 inch-miles

    Divide each side by 2 inches:

    x miles = 775/2 = 387.5 miles
