If a plane can travel 470 miles per hour with the wind and 410 miles per hour against the wind, find the speed of the plane in still air.

    Set up a system of equations.

    remember, if you're going against the wind, it'll be working against the force, but if you're going with the wind, you will be accelerating or going along with the wind quicker.

    { x + y = 470

    { x - y = 410.

    Add those equations together and the y's will cancel out

    2x = 880

    now solve for x
