    As per statement the number of purple marbles is 1 less than 3 times the number of red marbles

    P = 3R - 1 ... Eq ... 2

    P + R = 43

    3R - 1 + R = 43

    3R + R = 43 + 1

    4R = 44

    R = 44/4

    R = 11
