Nicole and her grandmother live in the same neighborhood, but a forest of trees separate their houses. If you left Nicole's house and you drove three miles West and then you made a right turn and went North four miles, you would be at her grandmother's house. Walking through the trees from Nicole's house to her grandmother's is the shortest distance. What is the distance?

    Using the pythagorean you take the square root of 3^2 and 4^2 to find the shortest distance:

    √ (3²+4²) = 5.

    Shortest distance is 5 miles
