    8 (x+1) - 3 (x+4) = 7 (2-x)

    8x + 8 - 3x + 12 = 14 - 7x

    5x + 20 = 14-7x

    Subtract 5x from both sides

    20=14 - 12x

    Subtract 14 from both sides

    6 = - 12x

    Divide each side by - 12

    -.5 = x
