    Steps to solve:

    f (x) = |x| + 1; x = - 3

    ~Substitute

    f (-3) = |-3| + 1

When you take the absolute value of a number it changes it to a positive number regarding it sign.

    ~Take the absolute value of - 3

    f (-3) = 3 + 1

    ~Simplify

    f (-3) = 4
