    This is how I'd work it:

    2 (x-1) + 3 (x+1) = 4 (x+4)

    2x-2+3x+3=4x+16

    5x+1=4x+16

    x=15

    To check, substitute x into the original equation and solve:

    2 (15-1) + 3 (15+1) = 4 (15+4)

    28+48=76

    76=76
