    m = 8.50 x + 9x

    Step-by-step explanation:

    Hi, to solve this we have to write an expression where:

    x : hours worked

    m : money earned by Joe and Maggie

    Joe makes $8.50 per hour, so if he works x hours he earns $8.50 (x).

    Maggie makes $9 per hour, so if she works x hours she earns $9 (x).

    If they work x number of hours, they both will make:

    m = 8.50 x + 9x

    8.5x + 9x = y

    That is because you don't know how many hours they worked, so you can't how much money they made.

    If you plugged in 4 hours for the x's you'll do something like this:

    8.5 (4) + 9 (4) = y

    34 + 36 = y

    70 = y

    That is how you would do it if you have the number of hours they worked.
