sarah and Jessica are sister's. Sarah's height is s inches and Jessica height is j inches. their father wants to know how many inches separate the two. write and equation for this difference in such a way that the result will always be positive no matter which is taller

    Let d be the difference between the heights of Sarah and Jessica.

    If Sarah is taller, then d = s - j

    If Jessica is taller, then d = j - s

    So, d = s - j or d = - (s - j)

    Hence, d = |s - j|, the absolute value equation which always gives positive result.
