You have to find a common denominator. Multiply 5/6 by 2/2 and then subtract 3/12.

    6 x 2 = 12 & 5 x 2 = 10 10 - 3 = 7, therefore 5/6 - 3/12 = 7/12

Remember to always subtract the numerators but never the denominators, same with addition.
