One-fourth of the seventh-grade students made the honor roll in the first quarter. The number of honor roll students increased by 18 in the second quarter. If 105 students made the honor roll in the second quarter, how many total seventh graders are there? Can you also work it out?

1/4 of the students made the honor roll in the first quarter, in the second quarter it increased by 18 so you add 18, and 105 is the total number of students who made the honor roll in the second quarter.

s = # of students

1/4 s + 18 = 105

Subtract 18 on both sides.

1/4 s = 87

To get "s" by itself you multiply by the reciprocal (which is basically flipping the 1/4 to 4/1 and multiplying 4/1 or 4 on both sides.)

s = 348
